From now until Friday, May 10th, I'm showcasing my hidden talent in support of mental health!
CAMH One Brave Night is a chance to share a piece of myself with the world for a great cause. I am excited (and a bit nervous!) to express my passion and creativity, so we can inspire hope for the one in five Canadians who experience mental illness every year.
A few close family members have struggled with anxiety and depression over the years which affected their lives and kept them from doing the things they wanted to do because they didn't get the help when it first started.
My biggest inspiration for doing this is my son. He has had anxiety in the past but recently it has returned and affected his life greatly. To go from a young man, so full of confidence, free spirt energy and full of life to someone who had a hard time getting out of of the house and having random panic attacks but not understanding why. It was heartbreaking to see this happening.
As a parent, you support your children, listen and do your best to guide them into being the best person they can be to prepare them for adulthood. As I could see this happening I was doing my best to help him but not knowing if I was handling it correctly. Was I doing everything right in this situation? I started reading about it so I could understand and put myself in his shoes. The more you understand the better you can help the person. I was on the right path however, one thing I read was to not over talk about it......yup.....I was talking too much. I'm a talker. You have to have a balance. I started doing that right away. Talk but more important, listen, understand, support and be kind.
We got an appointment with his Nurse Practitioner who he trusts and feels comfortable with. It was the best thing we did. He is on the right path and doing better everyday. I am so proud of him for reaching out and asking for help. He now talks about it and every person in his life has been so supportive and understanding. I am truly grateful for the kindness of others.
Please donate today and help me reach my fundraising goal.
Together we will break down stigma, fund innovative research, and provide access to new and promising treatments for people living with mental illness.
