Did you know that 1 in 5 Canadians experience mental illness in any given year? And that 4,000 Canadians die by suicide every year—almost 11 people per day?
And yet, many don’t realize that, in its most severe forms, mental illness can be fatal.
Men and women experience many of the same mental health disorders, but their willingness to talk about their challenges and feelings are very different. The perceived standards of masculinity and stigmas surrounding men seeking support for mental health disorders continue to present challenges. In scenarios where a lack of conversation surrounding mental health related challenges exist, the absence of communication may lead to a worsening of underlying conditions and to a more acute state of the presenting disorder.
Your support plays a major role in changing how the world sees, reacts to and treats mental illness. Together, we can break down stigma and lead important conversations about suicide prevention. We can create a safe space to give people time to get the help they need; families time to heal; and researchers and clinicians time to make breakthroughs and offer new treatment options.
